Welcome to Winnipeg Public Library's Legal Info Guide

The laws of Canada help to guide citizens in various aspects of daily life. Like many countries around the world, the Canadian legal system incorporates a combination of common law and statutory law. Common law refers to the body of law developed over time through the decisions of judges, and the principle that similar cases must be decided in the same way. Statutory laws are those that are enacted by the government. The Canada Guide provides an overview of the legal system and how it works.

Legal resources can provide useful background on legal issues and court systems, but individuals requiring legal advice and assistance should contact a lawyer or a legal aid program. All provinces operate programs which provide legal advice to those of limited means. Several sources for help are suggested in this guide on the Legal Assistance tab.
