This guide shares reliable information about your privacy rights in Canada, online and offline resources on the trends of data tracking, as well as tips and tools to help you protect your identity and data online.

What is Digital Privacy?

Digital privacy refers to protecting the privacy of your personal information when it is in digital form, whether it is on the Internet or simply stored on a computer. Personal information is information about an identifiable individual. Example include: name, date of birth, gender, as well as identifying numbers such as a driver’s license, social insurance number, credit card or even a library card number.

Why is Privacy Important?

Privacy is named as a Human Right in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In Canada the Supreme Court acknowledges that the Privacy Act has "quasi-constitutional status" with close links to the rights and values set out in the Constitution. The Supreme Court considers privacy an essential element to a free and democratic society.
