I have holds waiting for me at a library that isn’t opening on December 7th. Will my holds automatically be transferred to one of the open libraries?

We are currently moving holds from the closed libraries to the open libraries.

Holds from:

  • Fort Garry will be moved to Pembina Trail
  • Harvey Smith and Westwood will be moved to St. James-Assiniboia
  • Munroe will be moved to Henderson
  • Osborne and St Vital will be moved to Louis Riel
  • St. John’s will be moved to Millennium
  • West Kildonan will be moved to Sir William Stephenson
  • Windsor Park will be moved to St. Boniface

Once the holds have been moved and are ready for pickup, we will notify you by email or by telephone. Please don’t come to the open library until you have received a notification.

I can’t pick up my holds at the new location. What are my options?

Items that aren’t picked up will be checked in, and if there is another hold, the item will be forwarded to the next person in the queue. If there are no other holds, the item will be returned to the owning branch. You can place another request on the item, and ask staff to suspend your hold until the location you prefer opens. Please contact the library at 204-986-6450 or via our online our Ask Us! service for assistance.

Can I change my holds to another branch?

Yes. Please contact the library at 204-986-6450 or via our online Ask Us! service for assistance. Please note that the library delivery system will be sporadic during this phase - while it is possible to move items to another branch, you can expect longer than usual wait times.

How does contactless holds pickup work?

You will receive an email or telephone notification when your hold is ready to be checked out as well as how long it will be available for pickup.

Did you have items waiting for you at one of the ten open branches before we closed on October 31st? New notification will not be sent out, so please check your account.

Visit the library during open hours and please follow these steps:

  • Before you go to pick up your item, call the library so your items will be ready to pick up when you arrive. Do not leave a message – continue calling until you speak to a staff member. Visit our Contact Us page for the library phone numbers.
  • Staff will ask for your name and library card number. Then they will check out the items to you, mark them with your name and tell you where to pick them up.
  • Follow staff directions or signage to the designated pick up area; at most branches this will be near the front door or in the front vestibule.
  • Only one (1) person is allowed in the holds pickup area at a time – please wait outside if required. Please wear a face mask and practice physical distancing in the designated holds pick up area.

How does contactless book return work?

Book returns are open at all ten branches 24/7. Signs are posted showing where you can leave your library items.

Returned items will be quarantined for 96 hours, after which they will be checked in. These items will remain on your library card until checked in.

I don’t have a cell phone and/or landline. How can I call you when I get to the library?

If you don’t have a cell phone, please call us from home before you leave, and let staff know approximately when you’ll arrive. Staff will ask you for your name and library card number. They will check out the items to you, mark them with your name, and tell you where to pick them up. When you arrive, follow staff directions or signage to the designated pick up are and retrieve your items.

If you don’t have a telephone, visit the library during open hours. Follow signage directions – staff will be watching for you, or use the doorbell. Staff will ask for your name and library card number. They will check out the items to you, mark them with your name, and tell you where to pick them up.

Only one (1) person is allowed in the holds pickup area at a time – please wait outside if required. Please wear a face mask and practice physical distancing when in the designated holds pickup area.

If I cancel my hold, can I be put back on top of the holds list?

We will not be shuffling the holds queue. A new request would go to the bottom of the list if you cancel your hold. You can place another request on the item, and ask staff to suspend your hold until the location you prefer opens. Please contact the library at 204-986-6450 or via our online our Ask Us! service for assistance.

You can also use My Account features in our online catalogue to change your pick-up location, suspend, and cancel your holds.
